A picturesque haven less than 60 minutes from Queensland’s capital of Brisbane and the Gold Coast, the Scenic Rim has been a firm favourite for locals and interstate visitors alike. Known for its postcard-worthy rolling valleys and mountains, spectacular sunsets, wineries, dining experiences, and of course a plethora of activities for those adventure seekers among us, The Scenic Rim is now in the minds, and hearts, of the world. Recently listed as one of the Top 10 Regions to visit in 2022 by global travel authority Lonely Planet, the Scenic Rim is set to become an international tourist destination. Not only recognised for its sustainable travel experiences and magnificent World Heritage-listed rainforests, Lonely Planet also touted the generosity, passion and genuineness of the local providers. Here is our guide to the magic of the Scenic Rim.

Where to stay:

Whether it’s a romantic weekend away for two, or a family vacation to experience our natural environment, there are lodges and resorts aplenty. From a championship golf course to a luxury spa experience with hinterland views, the Scenic Rim accommodation options are some of Queensland’s most sought after.

The Kooralbyn Valley

Tucked away in its own little piece of paradise, The Kooralbyn Valley is home to a championship golf course that has been the drawcard of visitors from all over Australia. If a tranquil experience with the beauty of the region is what you’re looking for, then The Kooralbyn Valley will surely satisfy families, adventurers, couples, and corporate groups alike. With an outdoor pool, day spa, tennis courts and so much more, this resort is perfectly located to also enjoy the region’s other offerings from wineries, dining, and activities for the savviest of travellers.

Rooms and suites all offer striking panoramic views of either the championship golf course, the pool, or the Kooralbyn Valley landscape.

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat

Set against the backdrop of the World Heritage Lamington National Park, this multi award-winning retreat has been operated by the O’Reilly family for three generations, the family being the pioneers of eco-tourism in Australia since 1926. O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat offers a range of family-friendly activities, such as bird walks, animal shows and the picturesque Tree Top Walk, whilst catering to those who prefer a romantic getaway – with an onsite Day Spa, overlooking incredible scenery and equipped with couple suites, and a 25-metre infinity-edge pool.

The cosy, and traditionally fit-out suites are juxtaposed against the expansive views, overlooking the McPherson Ranges, or perhaps choose to stay in one of 48 Villas architecturally perched on the hillside.

Binna Burra Sky Lodges

Positioned against the Lamington National Park, Binna Burra is home to some of the most spectacular natural scenery and landscape. A quintessential Australian experience, the heritage-listed property has been operated since the 1930s and is one of the region's favoured eco-retreats.

The Sky Lodges are Binna Burra’s award-winning accommodation and are perfect for those who seek a luxury escape set against a backdrop of World Heritage-listed natural beauty.

Home to some of the best bushwalks, Binna Burra offers picturesque landscapes of mountain streams, lookouts, waterfalls, and cliffs with views that are quite literally breathtaking – Binna Burra being located 800m above sea level. This is a truly enchanting experience.

What to do:

The Scenic Rim doesn’t fall short of things to do and memories the be made when visiting this incredible region. From hikes through some of Australia’s most stunning national parks, and plenty of adventure activities to capture the hearts of the adrenaline junkie. To leisurely strolls through country townships and marketplaces, there is something for everyone.

See the Scenic Rim from new heights

One of the most spectacular ways to experience the incredible vastness of this region is to see it from the air. A tip for those adventure seekers, there are an array of activities to do from the sky. Guided tours from hot air ballooning, gliding, hang gliding, and if your adrenaline seeks so, from a light aircraft to some of the most spectacular mountain tops. We recommended sunrise and sunset, just as the light touches the region in a beautiful fashion.

Discover the spiritual beauty of Binna Burra, Lamington National Park

Binna Burra, Lamington National Park deserves a spot on our list as top things to do in this region. Pay homage to the earliest inhabitants – the Yugambeh Aboriginal kinship group- who know this area as Woonoongoora. The mountains here are sacred and spiritual, which can be felt on a visit to the area, and it is a place to be nurtured and respected.

With short walks and longer treks to suit everyone, the park’s forest is worthy of exploring streams, lookouts, cliffs and gorges that make up the area’s natural beauty.

Explore the local village markets

Go a little bit country, support the local businesses, and discover the region’s best country markets and shopping. Wander the streets of the local villages and townships and stock up on local produce and handcrafted products, art and crafts.

You can also explore the 90-year-old store, Maynard’s Department Store, which houses a range of country clothing, fabrics, headwear and more.

Where to eat:

With local produce having a starring role, from relaxed and casual eateries to award-winning dining, and even an American style smokehouse, the Scenic Rim is fast becoming a foodie favourite destination that satisfies even the fussiest of eaters among us. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a pub-crawl of the country hotels, or a visit to a winery or two. The region offers cuisine to tickle and tantalise the savviest of taste buds.

Hickory Slow

Surrounded by recycled timber, neon lighting, bronze sculptures, and dim lighting, you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a Texan smokehouse. Located on the corner of Main Street and Main Western Road in Mt Tamborine, Hickory dishes up American classics, and just as expected, it is finger-lickin' good. From crispy cuttlefish, dry-rubbed slow-cooked pork ribs, to chicken wings with blue cheese sauce, you’ll leave here with a big ol’ smile and a full belly.

O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards

Located along the banks of Canungra Creek, O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards is the perfect spot for families and couples alike to enjoy a relaxed afternoon in the sunshine. With delicious picnic baskets and stone-baked pizzas on offer, you can sit and relax while listening to local musicians Creekside. Oh, and of course there are wine tastings at the cellar door!

Cedar Creek Estate

The vineyards at Cedar Creek Estate, located in Mt Tamborine, offer the perfect setting for a relaxing, long lunch. With picturesque garden settings from the Gazebo, Veranda or Deck, with views looking across the Mt Tamborine scenery from the restaurant, it’s a beautiful spot to enjoy the afternoon away as the sun falls.
