The hum of excitement was tangible as we stepped into Brisbane Airport, suitcases in tow and hearts already halfway to paradise. For weeks, I’d been dreaming of crystal-clear waters, swaying palms, and the warm embrace of Fijian hospitality. Finally, the day had arrived for our much-anticipated family getaway to the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.
It was early morning, yet the airport was alive with energy. Families like ours bustled about, toddlers clutching plush travel companions and parents balancing passports and coffee cups. We breezed through check-in and security. Before long, we found ourselves in the departure lounge, indulging in a hearty pre-flight breakfast while the kids pressed their faces against the windows, marvelling at the planes taxiing on the tarmac.
The flight to Nadi was a seamless experience. Virgin Australia whisked us across the Pacific in a little over four hours, an effortless journey that belied the incredible transformation awaiting us on the other side. The onboard service was impeccable, and I could feel my shoulders begin to loosen as I sipped a glass of bubbles at 30,000 feet (It's 12pm somewhere right?). The kids, entertained by the in-flight entertainment, allowed my partner and me to enjoy a rare moment of calm.
As we descended into Fiji, the view from the window was nothing short of magical. Vivid turquoise waters stretched endlessly, dotted with lush green islands. The sunlight danced on the waves as though welcoming us personally. Landing at Nadi International Airport, we were greeted by warm, humid air and the melodious sound of Fijian singers performing a traditional welcome. Their smiles, wide and genuine, set the tone for the adventure ahead.
Arrival in Paradise
The transition from the airport to paradise was seamless. After collecting our luggage, we met our transfer driver, a friendly local named Joe. He adorned us with flower leis and handed out chilled bottles of water for the journey. As we drove the 45 minutes to Momi Bay, Joe regaled us with stories of Fiji—its rich culture, history, and traditions.
The moment we arrived at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, we knew we had stepped into a dream. The resort’s open-air lobby offered breathtaking views of the expansive lagoon, where gentle ripples sparkled in the afternoon sun. We were greeted with cool towels and a refreshing welcome drink—a delicious blend of tropical fruits that felt like an embrace for the soul.
Lagoon Views and Luxury
Our Lagoon Front Room was nothing short of spectacular. Its design struck a perfect balance between contemporary luxury and Fijian charm. Soft earthy tones, natural timbers, and intricate woven details brought a sense of harmony to the space. The private balcony overlooking the tranquil lagoon was our favourite feature, inviting us to sit, breathe, and soak in the serenity.
For families, Momi Bay is a haven. The room was equipped with everything we could need—plush robes for us, super comfy beds, and those little extras that just made the space feel like home away from home.
Morning Magic and Island Adventures
Each day began with a sumptuous buffet breakfast at Goji Kitchen & Bar. Imagine tropical fruits bursting with sweetness, buttery croissants that melted in your mouth, and made-to-order omelettes filled with fresh, local ingredients. Fijian favourites like kokoda—a refreshing mix of marinated fish and coconut milk—offered a taste of the island’s culinary heritage.
Mornings were spent exploring the resort’s stunning lagoon. Calm, clear waters were perfect for kayaking and paddleboarding. The kids loved splashing about while my partner and I glided across the water (cocktails in hand of course!), taking in the beauty of the lush surroundings. It was magical!
Beyond the Resort
While the resort offered everything we could possibly desire, the call to explore was irresistible. On our third day, we decided to venture out and visit the Sigatoka Sand Dunes, a short drive from the resort. Towering sand dunes stretched as far as the eye could see, a stunning contrast to the vibrant greens and blues we’d grown accustomed to.
The hike was invigorating, and our guide shared stories of the land’s significance to the Fijian people. The kids were thrilled by the adventure, racing down the dunes with wild abandon.
After returning to the resort, we used part of our FJ$500 resort credit to indulge in some well-earned relaxation. My partner and I headed to the Quan Spa for a rejuvenating couple’s massage, an indulgence that melted away every ounce of tension. Meanwhile, the kids spent their afternoon lounging by the pool and exploring the resort’s lagoon, making the most of every moment in this slice of paradise.
Evenings Under the Stars
Each evening brought new culinary delights. At the Fish Bar, we savoured exquisite seafood dishes with the backdrop of a fiery Fijian sunset. One standout evening was the resort’s traditional Lovo dinner, where food is slow-cooked in an earth oven. The smoky flavours of tender meats and root vegetables paired beautifully with the enchanting performances of local dancers and fire twirlers.
The highlight for our children was the cultural show. Wide-eyed and mesmerised, they watched as performers shared stories through dance, music, and fire. For us, it was a beautiful reminder of Fiji’s deep connection to its traditions.
A Bittersweet Farewell
Our final day arrived far too quickly. We spent the morning by the pool, its infinity edge seamlessly blending with the lagoon. As the kids made the most of their last swims, my partner and I took a quiet walk around the resort.
When it came time to leave, the staff gathered to sing us a farewell song. The harmony of their voices brought tears to my eyes—a heartfelt gesture that perfectly encapsulated the warmth and sincerity of the Fijian people.
